Will the FBI Get Additional Funding to Fight White Collar Crime / Occupational Fraud? |
|
On October 20, 2008, Business Standard produced an interesting report on the struggles of the Federal Bureau of Investigation as they attempt to combat white-collar crime with limited manpower and funding. Understandably, when the terrorist attacks took place on September 11, 2001, the FBI’s resources were shifted heavily to national security and anti-terrorism. As a result, the number of agents available to investigate fraud was significantly reduced. For at least the past five years, the FBI has requested increased budget appropriations to allow for an increase in the number of agents available to investigate white-collar crimes. These requests have largely been denied and the Bureau has accordingly been handicapped in its efforts. Recent economic problems have brought a new focus to financial crimes such as mortgage fraud and Congress is now calling for more FBI emphasis on such problems. Whether these requests will be accompanied by increased appropriations is yet to be seen.[Source]
